Today the townsfolk of Los Gatos broke ground for what will be a beautiful and wonderfully useful library. A wide variety of people were in attendance, including residents (young and old) and neighbors of the town, people working on this project for us, town employees, and some members of the media. Cameras were flashing nonstop.
The ceremony was MC’d by Kim Vestal, who’s been a longstanding south bay radio personality and Los Gatos resident. She did a fabulus, fun job. Also at the microphone were Pamela Jacobs, the Assistant Town Manager; Lyn Dougherty, the Library Board Chair; Carol Hamilton, President of Friends; Diane McNutt, Mayor of Los Gatos; Parthenia Hicks, Los Gatos Poet Laureate, who recited her poem for the occassion, “The Ground Breaks Open“. Special kudos to Parissa Koo, a Los Gatos High School student, who sang for us and who appears to be a true “rising star”. Also kudos to the two Los Gatos High School cellists who performed prior to anyone speaking and to the Los Gatos High School Jazz Combo, which provided music for the groundbreaking.
If you wanted to attend but weren’t able to do so, here’s a pdf file of the program that was handed out today (along with a bookmark). I took a few photos with my blackberry – hope you enjoy them. (You can track the library’s progress by clicking to view the town’s webcam here.) There are more photos at the end of the show – just click on the link to view them!
