On Saturday, March 3rd, Southern Kitchen marks an impressive 25 years of service*. This family-owned restaurant has been providing savory and sweet flavors with a touch of the South on E. Main Street for years – if you don’t know them you should!
Southern Kitchen invites you to celebrate with them, with a ribbon cutting and champagne toast from noon to 1pm (details on the Los Gatos Chamber events page). The restaurant’s web page does not have any information on the event, but it is advertised some on their social media pages. Regular hours should still be in effect, so if you can’t make it Saturday at noon, drop by weekdays from 7am to 2pm and weekends from 7am to 3pm for a scrumptious meal.
Los Gatos is home to a great many restaurants. But your kids may not want to try Romanian or Thai food, or perhaps a great steakhouse won’t be well appreciated by younger teens and younger people. But there are many, many places with simple fare, simple decor and sometimes too other things going on that are truly more kid friendly.
So here is the Mary Pope-Handy list of kid friendly restaurants in Los Gatos. Have I missed one? If so, let me know and I’ll add it.

Kids been extra good? Got a sweet tooth? You are covered in Los Gatos!
Dolce Spazio – a fantastic gelateria in downtown Los Gatos, this has often been voted the best place for dessert in Los Gatos. 221 N Santa Cruz Ave. Some inside dining, some outside dining, or you may just take it to go. Yum! http://www.dolcespazio.com/
Of course, there are many other eateries in town that may work well, whether it’s a doughnut shop, a pastry shop, a sandwich hut or any other type of establishment. If I’ve missed anything noteworthy, please let me know and it will be added here.
Over Thanksgiving weekend, my family and I decided to drop in to Super Duper Burgers in Los Gatos and try their fare for lunch. We discovered good food, decent prices, but not the kind of atmosphere that would make you want to linger.
As with many casual burger places, this is a self-service kind of place where patrons stand in line to order and later hop up to get their meals.
Unfortunately there is a shortage of seating that you cannot miss; as soon as you order, you must try to stake out a place to eat, which may not be that easy during the mealtime rush. There are standing tables and a some tables with backless stools indoors, plus a couple more tables with benches outside. (I did not see any chairs or seats with backs.) The space is big enough for more seating, so I was puzzled by the lack of it. Another customer volunteered that it had to do with parking spaces and ratios – I took his word for it. Whatever the cause, there’s really not enough space for everyone to sit down and dine for this busy eatery. I hope they can find a way to add more tables (with chairs, which would be nicer than stools).
The environment reminds me of some of the popular market style places which we see today like San Pedro Market in downtown San Jose. The ceilings are wooden and high but it has a warehouse feel with steel and concrete materials being prominent. There’s a very pleasant look to it. There’s loads of light and openness, but it’s also loud – too loud when the place is busy for conversing comfortably.
We did enjoy our food quite a bit. Most of us had burgers of some sort (one in my crowd is a veggie burger fan instead). My hamburger, a mini burger, was done exactly the way I like it, medium rare, and was one of the best burgers I’ve had in a very long time. Our lunch was ready and nicely hot in a reasonable amount of time. Employees there were terriffic and couldn’t have been nicer. Additionally, Super Duper was clean and when one set of diners left, it didn’t take long for the table to be ready for the next set.
For food and value, I’d give it high marks (5 out of 5 stars). For ambiance and comfort – uncomfortable stools and scarce seating, and for the unhappy loudness, I’d give it medium-low marks (3 out of 5 stars). Would I eat there again? Yes, sort of: if the weather’s nice, I’d try to snag an outdoor dining spot. If not, I think “to go” is the way to go.
Where can you find a great salad for lunch or dinner in Los Gatos? Here are some of my favorites (updated from the original 2007 post), though I must add a disclaimer that I have not (yet) tried every restaurant in town. Did I miss one that you love? Please post in the comments below!
Fast salads and salad bars in Los Gatos
Looking for a salad bar? Whole Foods offers a healthy selection. Ambiance, not so much. Another place to browse a salad bar is T-Birds Pizza, where you can get a fast slice of pizza with a small side salad for a very reasonable price. Comfy seats, too (unlike Whole Foods). In east Los Gatos, pizza and a salad bar can be found at Los Gatos Pizza, too – and their pizza is fantastic.
A fast salad in a low key environment can be found at Sweet Pea’s. There the only trouble is that you may be tempted to order quiche, crepes or something else! Also fairly fast with a nice variety of yummy salads is Panera.
The Purple Onion is in two locations in town and features a number of great salads, including the healthy sounding “Spa Salad” (I have never asked how many calories there are – I don’t think I want to know!).
Southern Kitchen (they don’t seem to have a website – here is a link to the page on them over at Yelp) is just incredible for breakfast, but the last time I was there I enjoyed an incredibly good Greek salad. I would go back just to try another one of their salads!
Willow Street lists a very nice variety of delicious salads but also includes a changing menu with seasonal items. In the last few months I have enjoyed a warm brussel sprout salad and a steak and peach salad. There seem to always be between four and six salads available, so it’s easy to return there again and again and not get bored.
Thinking of a taco salad, or a fajita salad? Both Andale’s and also Pedro’sare worth a visit, and if you want more casual, the food at Una Mas is fantastic too (and it’s easy on the budget). How about a Chinese Chicken Salad? Jasmine Chinese Cuisinehas 2 to choose from – the original recipe (from prior owners) and their newer one.
