Enjoy the Olive Oil Experience at We Olive!

Last Saturday we had family in town, so instead of hunkering-down at home to watch the Oscars, we enjoyed a night on the town to try someplace new to us: We Olive in downtown Los Gatos.

We Olive focuses on California grown, artisan, gourmet wine and olive oil.

Enter the shop and you will see shelves packed with olive goods and rows of tin tubs for dispensing samples into cups. It has fun, olive-themed goods, with olive wood cutting boards and bowls, appetizer trays, olive oil lip balms, free recipe cards, and bottle corks. The front of the store focuses on olive oil and vinegar, but also features complementary tastings of dipping oils, seasoned salts, tapenades, mustards, sauces, spreads, and even sweets like caramel and chocolate. I recommend the basil or Meyer lemon olive oils and the peach white balsamic or blood orange balsamic vinegars.

Move towards the back and there is a bar and table seating for wine tasting, which opens up into a spacious patio garden with more bar seating under a pergola wound with string lights. (And helpful heat lamps for our cool California evenings!)

Most wines available are California productions, and all but a few can be ordered in taster-sized glasses to build custom flights. We got recommendations for white and red flights and everyone was happy with their selection. If you’re unsure of what to get, or just indecisive, the bar staff can always give you tips and recommendations! Order gourmet snacks to enjoy with your wine, or make it a meal with salad or panini. We four ordered a cheese and charcuterie platter, and both the brie and the red wine and pepper salami were excellent. Don’t want wine? There’s also craft beer and a few non-alcoholic options. You can find the complete menu on the We Olive website (link below).

I should add that the staff we encountered were all very generous with their time, helpful, and attentive. They took good care of us and I would not hesitate to recommend them and We Olive for a pleasant time out.

Next time you’re downtown, stop in for some samples. Happy hour is every weekday with specials on select food and drink. On any Wine Wednesday, all day, pick up half-price bottles. Sample Saturdays feature new culinary delights using We Olive products with a new recipe every month.

Mary’s note: as always, this article was written after a pleasant experience and the shop’s employees did not ask for a review and no compensation was received for writing it. In short: it was my idea because I like the place. I hope you will, too.

Enoteca La Storia Wine Bar in Los Gatos

June 03, 2012

Enoteca La Storia wine bar in Los Gatos, CA (Silicon Valley)Enoteca La Storia Wine Bar in Los Gatos is a classic Italian wine bar but but actually features wine selections from around the world as well as several beers and light food – sandwiches, salads, cheese and meat boards with bread and also dessert.

Enoteca has been open for a couple of years, but Jim and I finally got around to visiting there last night.  We found it to be a delightful place all around, upscale, with wonderful offerings, tasty food and wine, and very good service. We chose to sit indoors at a table but sitting at the long bar is an option and there’s plenty of patio seating as well. The decor was interesting and nicely done and included attention to acoustics.  Some wine bars can get really loud when full of happy patrons, but even on a Saturday evening it was not hard to carry on a normal conversation there.

Enoteca also sells wine, of course!Karen, our server, was knowledgeable about the wines, the growing conditions in various places and food pairings.  I had never tried wine from Sardenia before, and was very impressed when she filled me in on the volcanic soil, the weather and how they impact wine.  (I enjoyed a lovely chardonnay from there.)  Jim had a red wine from New Zealand, which she advised would probably overpower one crostini with fennel but otherwise would be a good fit for our food.  She was right on target.

It should be added that parking is easy here as it’s in a shopping center with plenty of spaces.  This is not always the case in downtown Los Gatos!

Enoteca La Storia - classic Italian wine bar in downtown Los Gatos, CAWould we go back?  Absolutely.

Enoteca La Storia is located at 416 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, Los Gatos, very close to the intersection with Los Gatos-Saratoga Road (aka Highway 9), just a couple of blocks off of the freeway.

Cin-Cin Wine Bar in Los Gatos: Recycle Your Corks and Enjoy Great Food and Wine

September 20, 2011

Cin-Cin Wine Bar on Village Lane in Los Gatos (Silicon Valley)This week I have a Realtor friend from Buffalo, NY, Colleen Kulikowski, visiting with me, and it’s fun to both show her around and try some new spots out together. Yesterday I wanted to take Colleen to a local winery but Testarossa and Fleming-Jenkins were both closed (5pm on a Monday isn’t the usual wine tasting time, admittedly). Cin-Cin was open, though, and I’d never been there so it was a perfect opportunity to give it a spin. I was glad we did!

We arrived just a few minutes after 5 and it was clear that we weren’t the only ones with the same idea as three or four other groups all got there just before or after us. Seating was open in the bar area, though – and we only wanted a glass of wine and appetizers, so it worked out well to get a smaller table there.

As the hostess was seating the folks in front of us, I noticed a large cardboard box by the door which was a cork recycling recepticle. I’ve never seen one before but thought it was a great idea – perfect thing for a wine bar or wine tasting room! (Kudos!)

Colleen and I enjoyed some nibbles – the Broccolini Flatbread, which was sumptuous beyond all expectation – and admired the extensive menu (which includes gluten free options) while catching up. Cin-Cin was filling up fast, both in the bar and restaurant sections. That was surprising for a Monday night!

The wine selection was pretty good, but of course more limited by the glass. I would have loved it had they offered more local selections, since there are a lot of fantastic, locally produced wines in Los Gatos, Saratoga, Cupertino, San Jose and throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains (and my own hope was to have her try Silicon Valley labels). I looked for Cinnabar Chardonnay (one of my favorites) but had the chance to try something new which was also quite good, a Foley Chardonnay from the Santa Rita Hills area.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with a visit to Cin-Cin. The food, wine, service and ambiance are all excellent.
