Thank you, soldiers and veterans, for your service
Monday, May 31 2010 is Memorial Day.  There are no Los Gatos Memorial Day events that I am aware of, but Silicon Valley and neighboring counties are offering programs you might like to enjoy.

The Examiner has a good list  of events which includes happenings in San Jose, the south county, Santa Cruz and Felton (the best list I have found for the south San Francisco Bay Area).

If you’d like some help with celebrating this important holiday in a non-commercial way, it’s helpful to appreciate why we have this day off.  I found a great website with the history of the observance of this holiday at USMemorialDay.org. This site has a wealth of information related to Memorial Day, including online activities for kids and adults

For the last 10 years, it has been suggested that Americans volunarily observe a moment of silence in reflection & remembrance of those who have given their lives in service to the country.  USMemorialDay.org states:

“To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.”

f you click on the link for “Taps” you’ll get not just a history of the song but also various files which you can play to hear the song on your computer.
